Food and I? We are but perfect strangers.
Admittedly, I am an explorer… a food explorer. Who isn’t? As much as we want to stick to a well-thought-of-internet-researched-diet, we cannot just forego the fact that the city is bursting with beautiful dining places everywhere you look. Not to mention, the inviting photos on our facebook feeds and instagram walls. Who can say ‘no’ to that?
The cityscape is but an inevitable delicious menu of flavours. From local faves to international cuisines and infused dishes, there’s always a reason to eat. Go ahead, eat with gusto and have an adventure.
Here are some of my recent and old faves. Some of which I’ve loved since my transfer to this great city while others are a new addition to my personal gastro map of Davao. Have you been to these places? What’s your fave?
Davao New Famous Restaurant
Address: Ramon Magsaysay, Davao City
Contact No.: (082) 227 2633
A certified gastronomic institution in itself, this humble restaurant has been feeding locals and visitors of the city. Their specialty? Everything on their menu. But, many, including me, favors their bowl of hot Gulame on any given day.
Gulame is basically a beef noodle soup. It’s rich beef broth gives this soup it’s distinct taste. Tangy and spicy, this noodle soup is packed with textures from the different ingredients used. At Davao Famous, every bowl is a certified comfort food favorite. Try it, you’d surely thank me later.
Antonio’s Bar & Grill
Address: SM Ecoland; Abreeza Ayala Mall
Contact no.: (082) 299 3904
A favorite by my Dad, he loves Antonio’s (at SM Ecoland) because of their hito. On the other hand, Mama and I loves to indulge with their Crispy Fried Bangus with Gata. Personally, I love that it’s boneless and crispy but not dry on the inside. The decadent gata and crispy kangkong makes it more interesting – giving off a distinct Pinoy flare that’s gastronomically intriguing.
One other fave is their Ube Lumpia. I just have to have this every time we dine. It’s a very simple dish but one that never fails to make me smile at the end of every meal. With or without ice cream, I’d munch on these babies in a snap.
Address: Unit D, Paseo Uno Bldg, Ruby St., Marfori Heights Davao City
One of Davao’s newest gastro places to be, Street Grub is a tour around the world kind of resto that you’ll definitely love. Its interior is artistically loud and makes for a great conversation piece every single time. Aside from the obvious, I love that their menu is downright inviting – prompting you to take a seat, place an order and enjoy your meal.
Of their menu, I am a fan of their French Dip Sandwich. It’s not your typical sandwich. Why? It’s a break-the-sandwich-and-dunk-onto-the-sauce kind of experience. The beef is to die for – well marinated, succulent and juicy. The dip is rich and thus complements the beef strips all together.
Address: 121 Talisay street Juna Subdivision, Matina, Davao City
Contact No.: 0906 516 2401
Quaint resto tucked in a residential strip, Bistro Ah-Lyoh can be considered a newbie in the resto scene. Despite such, they have some secret weapons on their menu that’ll have you coming back for more.
Experience the richness of tomatoes and the sea with their Seafood Marinara pasta. I packed, savory and textured. A bit creamy, their bowl can be shared for everyone to enjoy. Oh and have I mentioned, it’s packed with seafood nibbles? Also, try their Chicken Alfredo Pizza.
