Filipino Pride at WCOPA 2016

Team Philippines

The Philippines has showcased and produced some of the best local and global performers the world has known. Talent, in the country, is not scarce. For one, we are a talented nation that has etched its presence in a global scale. From pop to opera to dancing, we, Filipinos, have something to offer.

Hailed as the olympics in the world of performing arts, the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA for brevity) has been an avenue for talented musicians, singers, dancers, models and actors to showcase their talents and compete against other talented individuals from all over the world.

World Championships of Performing Arts 2016 was held at Long Beach California, USA last July 8 to 17, 2016. A live global webcast (July 15, 2016 at the Terrace Theater) at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center was open for everyone to watch.

Contestants from over 50 countries are to perform their best 1-minute performance in front of 75 globally acclaimed entertainment judges and compete in the hopes of being crowned the next best world performer.

This year’s annual week long competition is the biggest gathering of talents from all over the world. Of which, the Philippine delegates won 175 medals (39 gold, 65 silver, 43 bronze) and Senior Grand Champion Performer of the World 2016 for Junior New System. Completing the delegates were performers from Muzik’s Kool – Davao’s premier music training centre that provides students with opportunities to learn, appreciate and feed their passion for music.

Eight of the WCOPA Philippine delegates were from Davao. Of which, 6 were from Muzik’s Kool. Davao’s pride included Marco Unabia (dancing: hiphop, open categories for juniors and jazz); Jazmine Sarmiento (singing: broadway, open categories and variety); Jemimah Morales (singing: contemporary, jazz and ballet); Mae Ann Bornillo (singing: gospel, song&dance and country); Ann Quitoriano Casteel (singing: contemporary, gospel, broadway, pop and open categories); Ira Sisa Aparra (dancing: jazz, hiphop and ethinc); David Walter (modeling) and Jizelle Dea Formilleza (singing: jazz, Latin and open categories) – who was sponsored by Damosa Land Incorporated (DLI) and has been a regular during DLI events.

Since 2014, Muzik’s Kool has already been training delegates for the WCOPA. By 2015, Jeremy Sarmiento was appointed as the official talent scout of WCOPA. Hailing from Davao, he then began sending some of Muzik’s Kool top students to compete. Of which, majority won top awards.

Muzik’s Kool, owned by Sir Ricky Floirendo, offers one-on-one course lessons in classical and contemporary music (particularly in voice, piano, guitars, drums, violin, flute and saxophone). They also provide a complete music environment through the best architectural design conducive to teaching and learning, tutorial rooms equipped to suit the students’ needs, rehearsal studios with complete facilities, venues for public performance and experience in music production.

Muzik’s Kool is located at Door #7, Damosa Building, JP Laurel Avenue, Lanang, Davao City
