A Taste of Thailand in Davao

Disclaimer: This is the full feature from my The Royal Chef column on Edge Davao.

Balanced. Aromatic. Complete. No, it’s not rocket science; it’s Thai cuisine.
Known for its interplay of flavours, Thais cuisine is one of the most popular cuisines in the world. As such, some of its dishes has since been favored by the majority who seeks for comfort beyond the miles. And here in Davao, Dusit Thani, providing for premier and exceptional luxury living experience, lets you experience the flavours of Thailand without leaving the city.

In Davao, where everyone is always in search of a new favorite, Thai cuisine has been making its way into the hearts and palates of locals and visitors alike. It’s sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and spicy flare makes for a great palate satisfier and conversation piece amongst family and friends. Not to mention, snaps worthy of insta hearts.

Speaking of which, Davao city’s newest luxury urban oasis, Dusit Thani, through the efforts of its developer, Torre Lorenzo Development Corporation, came up with a cooking demo to highlight their space and services and of course, make the people of Davao fall in love with Thai cuisine – all over again.

Ms. Chai Abaya, Properties Sales and Marketing Manager, was there to welcome the guests and introduce everyone to what Dusit Thani really is. The event was well-attended by clients, heads and staff of Dusit Thani and people who wants to experience luxury living in Davao City.

An intimate event of laughter, food and cooking was what took place at their Siam Centre Showroom at their Lanang Business Park office. Their showroom is nothing but spectacular. Its minimalist Asian-theme décor lures you in an instant. Certainly, the room is tailor-made to depict Thailand’s effervescent culture. It felt like home from all corners.

Spearheading the event was no less than the Crazy Cook herself, Chef Carmina del Rosario – one of the country’s formidable chefs and culinary personalities. With her Thai background, it was no wonder why she was the perfect choice. True to form, Chef Carmina gave out one of the most enticing cooking demo’s I’ve attended. It was smooth, fun and very informative.

Kao Tang Na Tang (Crispy Cracker with Tamarind Pork Dip) Thai Meatballs with Sweet Chili Sauce and Green Curry Sauce Tod Mun Goong (Shrimp Cakes)

The cooking demo featured (four) 4 incredibly delicious and easy to prepare Thai dishes that uses fresh, local ingredients. Aside from the four, there were also a number of Thai cuisine nibbles that kept everyone munching from start to end. From appetizers of Kao Tang Na Tang (Crispy Cracker with Tamarind Pork Dip) to balls of Thai Meatballs with sweet chili sauce and green curry sauce to iced Thai coffee, everyone was in a festive mood as Chef Carmina took center stage.

Dish 4: Tako (Water Chestnut and Coconut Custard)
Refreshing and very light on the palate.

Personally, I have always been a fan of cooking demo’s (attending culinary classes is a mantra). It’s my way of ‘immersing with the place’. Yes, immersion for me always equates to food. Figures.

The event was more than just cooking; it was learning a new culture through food. It was embracing the many flavours of Asia and marrying the same with our staples. Despite the distance, it still is possible to recreate a favorite and make it your own. Best thing? Chef Carmina gave out tips on what ingredients we can substitute and recipes for each dish cooked.

Again, Thank you (ขอขอบคุณ) for the opportunity.
